  • The barrio of Comuna 13 clings to the side of a steep hillside in Medellin were residents had to climb up and down many steps to get into town and back.  Now Medellin is the first city in the world to build a series of outdoor escalators as public transport, creating mobility solutions for the neighborhood with such difficult accessiblity.  The escalators are divided into six sections and have shortened the trip from a 35 minute hike by foot to six minutes.  In the photo a boy is seen riding the escalator down as he is watched by one of the construction personel.
